Comments: Hi there, I am a graduate student at Smith College and am doing my research paper on FAS. I had the opportunity to follow a little girl with FAS around for a day to gather information for a case
study and I was intrigued my her and her disability. I thought I might click on the "net" and come up with a few things to read for my paper when I found your web-site. Now 85 pages of notes later, I'm struggling to fit it into 7! This site is incredible - easy to use, fascinating, educational and above extremely personal. I feel like I've known all of you for years (especially John!!). You've provided me with a wealth of information and a desire to educate others about FAS past this assignment. Now if I can only get it done by Thursday!

Thank you,

Anna

Child's age and Dx: 22 facial deformity

Comments: I have lived this nightmare for almost 23 years blaming myself for drinking and drugging through my pregnancies in total ignorance of what I was doing to my unborn baby. At the time in 1979 there was no information about this and no one was concerned or cared about it. I think about this every day of my life and cannot forgive myself. I need to be in contact with other parents of kids with FAS.

Thank you,

Marlene Borchert

Child's age and Dx: 21, ADHD/ADD and FAS

Comments: I learned about the ADD/ADHD in approx. 1989 after I had been her adoptive parent for 3 years. She is now 21 and after a thorough testing by Dr. Brian West, I learned of the FAS. Apparently her problem was not sufficiently noticeable to have been diagnosed at birth or prior to this. This web site has been most beneficial to me and I look forward to time now to pour over all that I have printed.

I wish I could find more resources here in SC. Do you know of any? Dr. West may; my husband and I are meeting with him next week.

Thank you for all the hard work that went into this web site and for all your research.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Cassie Simpson

Comments: I'am speechless. There are so many things that whirl inside my head and heart after reading this awsome site!
Every emotion I have has been stretched to the fullest extent. My husband and I dated for 6 yrs before we got married and have been married for 13. In that time I have watched the efforts of my In-laws trying to raise their adopted daughter and now my husband and I are raising three of his sisters children. We have no doubt that his sister is FAS and we know that our children were exposed to alcohol as well. Two of our children are doing remarkably well, while the eldest is not functioning very well at all. After living with this for so long, There aren't words that are suitable to describe my feelings. Thank you for this site!

Comments: My husband and I are in the process of adopting our foster child who has FAS. He has just turned 3 and we have had him since he was 7 months old. We love him very much and I want to have as much info on FAS as I can. I have been to a couple of seminars and have read a couple of books on the subject. I would very like much to hear the success stories. Everything I read is very scary. I am so glad this web site is here. My fc siblings fm told me about it because we have been looking to info on "adoption subsidies". Our county apparently goes by our income and not that the child is special needs. We are working on it and I feel hopeful that it won't be a huge problem to solve. Thank you for sharing your experiences and knowledge with those of us just starting on this unexperienced path.

Comments: I HAVE READ MOST OF THE POSTED SITES AND FIND THEY MATCH ALMOST EVERY FEELING I HAVE ABOUT FAS. I ADOPTED MY SON WHEN HE WAS 1 YEAR OLD. I HAVE HAD HIM SINCE HE WAS 3 DAYS OLD. THE BEST THING FOR US IS WE WERE TOLD HE HAD FAS WHEN WE RECIEVED THE CALL FROM DYFS. BUT THAT DID NOT MEAN MUCH TO US AS WE HAD NEVER HEARD OF IT BOY DID WE HAVE A LOT TO LEARN. WE HAVE HAD OUR UPS AND DOWNS BUT WE HAVE BEEN LUCKY. WE PUT OUR SON IN A PROGRAM AT 2YRS OLD AND SCHOOL AT 3 YEARS OLD FOR HANDICAP CHILDREN. WE HAVE WORKED WITH HIM AND FOUGHT FOR SPECIAL PROGRAMS IN SCHOOL AND IT HAS PAID OFF. HE WILL START VOC TECH IN THE FALL. HE WORKS WITH A NEIGHBOR MOWING LAWNS. HE ALWAYS MANAGES TO FIND WORK WITH SOME NEIGHBOR. AND HE ALSO GETS THE NEIGHBORS TO TAKE HIM ON THEIR BOATS FISHING. HE IS HAPPY NOW AT LAST HE LIKES HIS SCHOOL IT A VERY PROGRESSIVE SCHOOL. HE IS 15 BUT HAS THE BELIEFS OFA 10 YR OLD. HE DOES TRUST EVERYONE HE MEETS. WE KEEP AS CLOSE AN EYE ON HIM AS WE CAN. WE LET HIM GO FISHING TO THE PARKS OR BEACH. MOST OF THE TIME THERE IS NOT A PROBLEM. HE SHARES MOST OF HIS PROBLEMS WITH ME. WE SIT AND TALK THEM OUT. HIS QUESTIONS NOW ARE MOSTLY ABOUT DRINKING HE WANTS TO KNOW WHAT GETTING DRUNK FEELS LIKE. I TRY VERY HARD TO DISCOURAGE HIS URGE TO DRINK. TO MY KNOWLEDGE HE HAS TRIED BEER BUT NOTHING ELSE. I TELL HIM ABOUT HIS FAS AND WHAT THAT MIGHT MEAN TO HIM AND HIS BODY. I HOPE IT IS JUST QUESTIONS AND NOTHING MORE. HE HAS FRIENDS AND WORKS AND GOES TO SCHOOL. I COULD WRITE FOR HOURS ON WHAT WE HAVE BEEN THROUGH WITH FAMILY AND NEIGHBORS BUT WHO HASN'T BEEN THERE. I AM GLAD MY SON IS HAPPY AND I LOVE HIM MORE THAN ANYTHING IN THIS WORLD AND WILL ALWAYS FIGHT FOR HIM.

Comments: Dear Teresa:

I am a foster parent (specialize in teenagers) and within the last two years have had a couple of kids that were different...into lots of trouble, but not evil or malicious; did the very things they were asked not to do, but were not oppositional or defiant; hated school, but claimed that they were smart.

AND THERE WAS NO DIAGNOSIS ON THEIR CHARTS except the usual ADD, ODD, etc.
But I knew that there was something more going on. There was a difference. In doing research for over a year now, on the net, I have, on my own, determined that these kids are FAS and have finally achieved success in having them accurately diagnosed. (One girl even had had several surgeries on her ventral septal valve - a classic FAS symptome, but the doctor did not know that it was a FAS symptome and did not forewarn the then foster mom so that the appropriate education plan could be established. The girl is now 17 and THE PROGNOSIS IS POOR to quote the literature).

But I have become rabid on the subject and plan to speak at all of the local community organizations' lunch meetings, etc. May I freely use the brochures, quote you, etc., with credit, of course?

Thank you for your response.

Comments: My step-son was adopted - his birth mother as a known alcoholic. After his adoptive mother died, his father "relied" on the school system and local physicians to tell him what was wrong with Charlie. It has only been in the last 2 years when it became obvious that Charlie was not going to "grow out" of his bad behaviors, that his father sought out additional testing. Unfortunately, Charlie could be the FAS poster child - - with most of the developmental issues and behaviorial problems. To further complicate things, there are few resources available here in Tennessee and we have wasted a lot of time and energy getting lost in the mental health system, which is NOT qualified to deal with FAS. We are in the process of getting a neurological assessment: to see if medications would help manage the ability to focus and to see if a FAS diagnosis could be officially obtained to classify Charlie as "other medical impaired" - which could then allow him to qualify for Vocational Rehabilitation. To date, even though his IQ is only 77 and his behaviour is so disruptive that he is on the verge of long term expulsion from the school system, Charlie has NOT qualified for special education or ANY special accomodations. Your website and information obtained from NOFAS have been the best resources that we have found to help us to better understand this horrible impairment.

My daughter shows many more of the physical characteristics of FAS, while my son struggles with more severe learning disabilities than his sister. This site was very interesting -- we've come a long way in making information available on FAS. Let's all keep working toward PREVENTION!
