The Good Thief
by Holly Starr

I overheard Austin (10, FAS) scolding his younger brother for stealing candy. He was repeating, word for word, what I've said to him: "If you want candy, ask. Don't take what's not yours." So I ask Austin if he steals. "Oh no Mom, I would never steal."

"What about the bucket that was holding the Christmas candy, the flashlight, the fan, the pen that all the boys earned from the school fund-raiser? What about the yoyo, the set of tops from Papa's house?" These things aren't hidden after they're taken, no they are on display on his desk.

Austin tells me, "You told me after I clean off my desk, to put things on my desk that I felt needed to be there, so I did."

And so he did. How can I argue with logic like that?
